• Stallman cancellation project

From Arelor@VERT/PALANT to All on Friday, April 09, 2021 07:00:04
    Hello there!

In case you don'tknow, there is an ongoing effort to cancell Richard Stallman (the former FSF president) since he got readmitted in the Free Software Foundation.

Some dude on efnet was theorizing that the attempt to kick Stallman is driven by SIllicon Valley tyrants, since the organizations that are trying to overthrow him happen to receive lots of Microsoft or Google money.

    Thoughts?

RMS is a bit of a jerk, to say the least. I think that's the theory of least effort.

As far as I know, that statement is true: RMS is a bit of a jerk.

Bur is he jerky enough for all the storm which has been generated around him?

By the way, it looks like some group posted an open letter claiming for the removel of RMS from the FSF (again) anhd for the removal of the FSF board, and has some high profile signers. It turns out another group posted an open leter in support of stallman and this one has even more signers.

I suppose if you are not in the mess, it is a great time to eat popcorn watching it.

No. But there is a concerted effort by SJWs to "bring down" any high-profile person.

When Linux Torvalds was giving talks, for example, he went nowhere (and I mean nowhere) without a wingman. So there's always a witness in case someone makes an accusation.

Many high-profile open source male gurus stopped mentoring women for fear
that one would be an SJW and accuse him of something.

The risk is real - and NOT NEW (which surprised me).

These two statements are not mutually exclusive. He was a visionary in his
time who started an entire movement that we all have benefited from today. He is also very likely on the autistic spectrum, probably asperger's, which prevents him from understanding social cues. He has stated that he's been
told that he makes other people uncomfortable with some of the things he
says, but he doesn't understand why.

He should be accountable for harm he causes, but that doesn't mean he and the movement he started should be canceled. There's no doubt there's some very powerful silicon valley interests behind this.

The next battle in this war is just beginning. If you are familiar with the Amazon and ElasticSearch situation, that's going to be the way it's is done going forward. Open source and "single source" has been a trend for a number of years, but I think we'll continue to see that backfire as it did on ElasticSearch. Not only does everyone still think Amazon created ElasticSearch, but they solidified that belief by forking and releasing it as OpenSearch. I'd bet ElasticSearch gets acquired within 3 years because Amazon just took their business model away from them.

I sincerely hope not AWS is a horrible steward for open-source in
general, and has an even worse history of UI/UX on their SaaS products.

Unfortunately, in the days of large cloud providers, SaaS models need a slightly different license than a lot of more traditional open-source,
and will depend on the business models of the backing/founding companies.

I prefer open-source, but am not blind to the realities of companies
that at least try to do the right thing while making a living for
    themselves and employees.

(disclosure, I have a family member that works for Elastic).

Mostly agreed... funny that so many outspoken individuals seem to be
those perfectly happy propping up massive tech conglomerates or CCP

IIRC, the statement was something along the lines of a female at 16-17yo
is not the same as a female at 10-12 years or younger.

I used to know someone who was tried and convicted of statutory rape of
a minor and has to spend the rest of his life as a registered child sex offender, because he was 18yo, had sex with his then 17yo girl friend
and the girl's parents were friends with the local DA.

Shit like the above isn't justice.

the woke blew up and accused him of being misogynistic... projecting
