Linux is a great alternative to Windows. I ran it before when I had a desktop pc and loved it.
I have a second PC running Linux (which I use as a Plex media server, among other things). I actually have my BBS running in a Windows virtual machine on that PC. So far I've kept my BBS in Windows, partly because if it's not broken then don't fix it. It would take some work to get it migraded to Linux, though I imagine it probably wouldn't be too difficult. I do have one Win32 door set up on my BBS (Ambroshia: Test of Time), which has been played before by some users on my BBS, but I'm not sure how much it would be missed.
You can actually run *both*, like I do. So long as the Linux-sbbs instance and the Windows-sbbs instances have access to the same sbbs directory tree, they can live together harmoneously, serving a different set of nodes each (that the purpose of the FirstNode/LastNode values in your sbbs.ini file). I actually run 3 instances of sbbs: Win7-32 on bbs.synchronet, Win10-64 on vert.synchro.net and Debian-Linux-64 on cvs.synchro.net.
If you want to know more about how to do that, just ask. There may be a wiki page on it already or I if not, I should write one.
