So far 2022 has not been very good to me. I've suffered with a lot of arthritis in my joints. Hoping it gets better later in 2022 and not worse. I do however miss running Synchronet BBS as it was a lot of work and fun at the same time. I tried using a Microsoft Surface Pro with it but it wouldn't run Linux or Synchronet BBS properly. So I went back to the iPad and stayed with it ever since instead.

    Sorry to hear that.

But yes, a Microsoft Surfce Pro runs Windows 10 or 11 which can and does run Synchronet BBS "properly", no problem. It'll even run an Ubuntu/Linux subsystem (inside Windows) if you really want to.

What problems did you have running Synchronet on the Surface Pro again? The Surface Pro is really just another Intel PC, and I don't see why there would be a problem running Synchronet on it. From a Google search, it sounds like the Surface Pro should be able to run Linux too.

That file is normally installed with the Visual Studio 2010 redistributable. After installing that, the file should be found, so it's weird that you were getting that error. Perhaps that file was manually copied to the system without installing the VS2010 redistributable? I'm thinking that could be fixed by running the VS2010 redistributable installer, or adding the system directory to your system path (any program needing that DLL would be able to find it from the system path).

I believe you could write to those directories after Windows prompts you for permission to do so. But anyway, you shouldn't have had to copy that file manually though. The proper way would have been to install the Visual Studio 2010 redistributable package (32-bit, as Digital Man said), and that should have solved that problem.

I didn't know that Synchronet BBS was still a 32-bit program.

Only the 32-bit editions of Windows still come with a 16-bit DOS virtual machine (which is required in order to run DOS doors). So Synchronet still had to be 32-bit in order to run in 32-bit editions of Windows.

(Though now I've heard there is a DOS NTVDM that will run in 64-bit editions of Windows, and that Synchronet 3.19 has support for that..)

I've played with it a little, there is a new version that supposedly works on Windows 11 and gets around the secure boot stuff - but you have to build it (and track down all the files-it's a "patch"). The built version the (assuming) college kid currently has on his webpage works fine on Windows 10 without secure boot and is easy enough to setup.

It's really cool, but the problem is it's from an NT 4 source code leak and everyone is afraid to host it because of they are afraid of a DCMA takedown (or worse). I know enough people at MS that I really think MS would have already whacked it if they were going to. Unfortuately, this NTVDM wasn't even MS code we are talking about, they licenced it from someone else. So the legal grey area is never going to get better.

Synchronet for Windows is still 32-bit mainly because:
    1. The version of the GUI development tool I use (C++Builder) only builds 32-bit binraries, and
    2. There's no compelling reason that I know of to use 64-bit binaries (of BBS software) on Windows x64 systems

Windows 11 is the first version of (non-server) Windows not to come in a 32 bit version. But 32 bit apps are fully supported and incredibly common. If MS deprecates 32 bit application support in Windows (and I honestly think we are at least a decade, probably more, from that happening), then you could make an OK case. There is little upside at this point to having native 64 bit apps in Windows unless your application or the files it edits are gigantic in size - it would mostly mean DM would have to manage/debug two different Windows packages.

Also, the incredible irony of being on a BBS message board and calling something 32 bit old technology.

Linux is a different case than Windows. 64-bit Windows is unable to run 16-bit DOS software (at least, not out of the box). Befire this new NTVDM came along, the general advice was that 64-bit Windows was pretty much incapable of running DOS doors.
